About the Geese

Early in the spring you will see the Canada Geese coming back to the wetlands at the sanctuary. They often will lay and hatch their eggs here, but there is a constract struggle for supremacy between the trumpeter swans and the geese. The trumpeters will tolerate only smaller varieties of birds, like the ducks and will often chase the geese and attack their young. Once the swans begin attacking the young, the geese will head for other grounds, but because the babies are often too small to fly, the grounds must be within reach.

The sanctuary has an outlet through the water that leads to Bass Lake and the geese may use this as an escape route, though we have seen them with their goslings walking along the roadside, presumably heading for nearby Bass Lake Provincial Park.
